An Autism assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that aims to understand whether an individual meets the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition characterised by differences in social communication, social interaction, and restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities. At Aire Valley Psychology, we offer private Autism assessments in West Yorkshire for both adults and children, following the latest clinical guidelines.
Initial Screening Appointment
The assessment begins with an initial screening appointment, which lasts up to 90 minutes. This session is led by our Clinical Psychologist and Neurodevelopmental Practitioner. The purpose of this meeting is to understand the reasons behind seeking an assessment and to gather preliminary information about the individual’s developmental and behavioural history.
During the session, we will discuss the assessment process, any concerns you may have, and complete screening questionnaires. These forms will be sent to you ahead of the appointment for you to complete. At the end of this appointment, we will provide a summary of the findings and advise whether it’s appropriate to proceed with the full Autism assessment.
Autism Assessments West Yorkshire
If the initial screening suggests a full assessment is necessary, we will move forward with a thorough evaluation. This process follows the guidelines set by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and is tailored to the individual’s age and needs. The assessment includes:
- Developmental History: A detailed exploration of developmental milestones and behaviours consistent with Autism criteria outlined in the DSM-5.
- Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2): A structured assessment that evaluates communication, social interaction, and behaviours associated with Autism.
- School Observation (for children): Observing the child’s behaviour and social communication in their educational setting (where applicable).
- Speech and Language Assessment: Evaluating communication skills and language development to gain a fuller understanding of the individual’s needs.
Outcomes and Next Steps
At the conclusion of the assessment, we will provide a detailed report summarising the results, including whether a diagnosis of Autism is appropriate. This report will also include recommendations for support, interventions, and next steps, helping individuals and families navigate the resources and therapies available for managing Autism.
As a service, we recognise that a diagnosis is just the start of a journey. We carefully provide bespoke and individual feedback, in order for the person to see a diagnosis as an opportunity for them to grow.
